Culture Night

negative points:

Dublin has good museums but the two best ones are far from the centre so you won't really bother going on a friday night.

the fact to help kids promote culture is great but you don't make them play (well they didnt really know how to play) on a big square in the city where everyone is passing by and saying it represents the irish culture. you make them play and say their poems in an art gallery, or a theatre and you use the main stage for local bands etc to represent the music culture for example... everyone stopping seems ashamed of what was happening...

not enough coverage and promotion? more posters to announce next year please.

so my night was:

-capoeira in Trinity

-following the Batucada (Brasilian percussions ensemble) through Temple Bar

-exhibition on the knowledge and breaking the established tradition in the Project Art Centre

-stop for a pint in the Gogarty (traditional irish pub with live session) and watching Colin Farrel's sosie playing the fiddle

-trying to understand what was happening in Meeting House Square (and oh my god the presenter was awful, not funny, ridiculous... the kids on stage didn't seem to appreciate him either)

next year i'll do the workshops in the acting schools and more exhibitions in the art galleries.

Henrik Ibsen's
Hedda Gabler
in a new version by Brian Friel

World Premiere Tuesday 30th September
Low Price Previews from Thursday 25th September

“There is no doubting we are in the thrall of as masterly a dramatist as the theatre possesses”

The Times

Eighty years after the Gate’s inaugural production of Ibsen’s Peer Gynt, it celebrates its birthday with a wonderful new version, by Brian Friel, of Ibsen's Hedda Gabler. Idealistic heroine or manipulative villain, the character of Hedda is one of the great dramatic roles in theatre and has become known as the ‘female Hamlet’.

As she struggles to come to terms with a marriage to a man she finds numbingly dull and a pregnancy that threatens to seize hold of her body and future, Hedda quickly realises that the roots of convention run deep and, aided and abetted by her predatory confidante, Judge Brack, begins to indulge in evil games, manipulating the fate of all who enter her orbit.

HWCH-Scotland in ALT

Foxface: nice and fresh pop

Frightened Rabbit: a guitar band as people said with a live rage and good lyrics.

We Are Physics: they rock the place but the audience was so not into them... proper punk mixed with moves ala metronomy, great rhythm and if i wasn't doing the lights i would have been jumping around at the front

Sons and Daughters: i really like them, amazing female voice, going from pop ballads to catchy rock, a new song i really enjoyed because i understood from the very start what was the verse/chorus parts and rhythm which makes it easier to do lights.

so happy to hear at 8.30 on sunday that Sons and Daughters got moved because i was afraid i'll miss them as we had to load out the backline in ALT after our gigs...  the venue production manager and the hwch production assistant came to me and were like "sons and daughters are moved here, are you happy? we arranged that especially for you so you could see them and even do the lights for them..." lol, yes for once i was happy that it was pissing rain outside... and it made me discover We Are Physics which i totally heart now.

cooking

i just made cheese empanadas... yummm

the recipe in spanish

Chilean empanada
Chilean empanada

The Chilean empanadas have a wide range of fillings, but there are two basic types; one is baked and usually filled with "pino", and the other is fried and usually filled with cheese. The fillings for the empanadas usually contain cheese and/or different types of seafood, for example; mussel, crab, or locos (abalone). The most popular empanada filling is pino, the most traditional Chilean filling, it consists of beef, onions, shortening, raisins, black olives, hardboiled eggs and ají (hot pepper).

hard working class heroes

was absolutely brilliant

the best festival by far, so well organised (i'm not talking as a punter but as a person who worked at the festival)

our stage manager steve was excellent and sarah his assistant, and susanna the production assistant, and the organisers, and the folder with all the detailed specifications for each band, and the schedule, and the after club in ALT with loads of artists showing up.

and i love scotland. and sons and daughters. and we are physics. and frightened rabbit. and foxface.

you'll have a quick review of all bands who played ALT tomorrow. 19 bands. plus the djs.

i'm too tired to think today. i went to the hwch afterparty in dorans and then i was working early this morning for the fringe festival...

going to bed now.

Foals suck part 3 and 4

http://www.lesinrocks.com/musique/album/foals-suck-3eme-e...

you don't do that

i like Fight Like Apes as a band but i have to say what they did last night was not cool. at all.

now i didn't see the gig, i just know from technicians what they did.

they trashed the stage. fair enough it's cool and rock n roll to trash your own instruments. but they also trashed the backline the festival was renting and audio gear.

they have to test every single piece of gear today to make sure it's working.

i hope FLA have money. for example some of the microphones are worth 900 euros each...
