i am angry
about the new law
pubs/clubs/venues etc closing at 2.30am from monday to saturday
pubs/clubs/venues etc closing at 1am on sundays
off license closing at 10pm.
how can i get a taxi if everyone is out at the same time?
is it safe to be in the street at the same time than everyone?
how many people are going to choose to drink more quickly than ever and become more drunk so they can enjoy their short night?
and how many jobs are going to be lost?
found on: http://www.politics.ie/viewtopic.php?f=88&t=38321&...
We are dj's, we are promoters, we are bar staff, we are waiters, we are flyer staff, we are bar backs, we are cloakroom staff, we are taxi drivers, we are fast food staff, we are shop staff and we are here today to send one clear message to this Minster and his government.. 'HANDS OFF OUR JOBS, AND HANDS OFF OUR LIVELIHOOD.
There are many well-meaning parts to this bill, such as the correct separation of alcohol products from regular food and drink products. The aim being to curb the association children make from a young age that alcohol is just another type of commodity. On the one hand, yesterday the drinks industry rightly signed up to a new code of practice governing advertising of alcohol products at certain times of the day and putting a cap of 25% on a stations total advertising output.. All very worthy most people will agree, until you further examine what they propose to do on the other hand.... they want a blanket ban on all alcohol sales past 2.30 mon - sat, and bizarrely 1 am on Sundays.. This will most defiantly lead to clubs not bothering to open for 2 hours trading on Sundays and lead to the inevitable job losses. .. There is a nanny state argument being put forward here that they want us all up and early for work on a Monday morning. .. 2 issues here.. Maybe I don’t work on a Monday morning, and secondly how does that argument hold water on tues/weds/ thurs / and Friday mornings?
Currently nightclubs operating under the theatre license loop-hole (as nightclubs are still not recognised as a legal entity and operate under criteria from the Public Dance Hall Act of 1935) can sell alcohol for half an hour before and after their performance. We understanding that if this bill passes there will be a blanket last orders time of 2.30am with a half hour drinking up time. Not only will this cause a huge strain on our public transport services causing everyone to spill out onto the street at the same time, I think it is this very link - tying alcohol to entertainment and opening hours - that adds to our drinking culture.
For over 10 years now many in the nightclub industry have been lobbying for sequential closing, and the granting of a swath of theatre licenses in the last few years gave hope that finally our words were not falling on deaf ears.. But suddenly with a swift pen-stroke by our outgoing taoiseach as he hightailed it off to paddy powers, or Dublin castle (whichever was closer) we find ourselves going backwards instead of forwards. So.. It begs the question...where has the political groundswell come from, to suddenly see us in this situation.. Has it come from the gardai...not likely..? The CSO will provide us with statistics that show that last year, cases of gbh and abh fell by 20%.... now they want us all out on the streets at the same time.. (And not at all on Sundays it would appear.) Many gardai I have spoken to have (of course off the record) expressed even more horror at this prospect..
Which leads us on to another point...
Why is the government not honouring their commitment to 2000 more gardai on the streets of Dublin to deal with public order issues... why are they creating more problems than they are solving with this bill?. Why are they not listening to the will of the people on this matter? More importantly.. Why are they listening to the Chairman of the Alcohol Advisory Group Gordon Holmes, who drafted these recommendations, who is on the record as saying he would not know what the inside of a nightclub looks like.. It’s quite unthinkable. It’s like having a Minster for finance that has no degree or background in finance... oh wait a minute.. We already have one....
Where is the common sense thinking in realising that not everybody works 9 to 5, that not everybody wants to go out and get blind drunk, that some of us just might prefer to have our last drink and then stay in the club until 4. 5 or heaven forbid 6 am, and get value for money for the 20 or 30 euro that we’ve paid in to see our favourite dj (that is if he comes to Dublin to perform at all, and is not put off by having to finish his set at such a ridiculously early time.
Where is the sense in spending hundreds of million of euro advertising our Island around the world only for us to sell tourists a pig in a poke.. When will this government realise that not all tourists to Ireland want to come on a coach tour to Johnny fox’s, when will this government not wake up and realise that there is a very valid and vibrant youth tourism market that Ireland just does not exploit.. And indeed that millions of euro leave this island every year, by disaffected and disfranchised Irish citizens.. At a time when all we hear around us the r word, recession, if these proposals come to pass, they can then add another r word to the vocabulary of the youth of Ireland, redundancy..
Before I finish id just like to take a quick straw poll.. How many people here today were out at the weekend? Now many stayed out past 2.30... how many of you caused criminal damage, or engaged in a criminal act... this bill wants to tar everyone with the same brush and by proxy criminalise us all... we have recently seen in the no vote in the Lisbon treaty that the very disaffected youth turned out in massive numbers and helped sway the vote in the no direction.. This IS a political issue, and is why we are at the gates of this historic building, we need to get active, we need to lobby, and we need to be involved in the process of government on this island... so I say this to you minister Ahern and especially to you Taoiseach Cowen, if you want to make this a political issue, if you want to take on the youth of this country, if you want to take on the very future of this island, we say to you.. BRING IT ON, BRING IT ON, BRING IT ON...

a brilliant movie
i have never seen a Batman movie. never. i just don't really go to the cinema that often as i spent all my money going to gigs instead.
so not a fan of Batman. and yesterday i went to see the Dark Knight. yes i went there because everyone said it was extraordinary and because it was Heath Ledger's last role.
and yes it was brilliant, fantastic, extraordinary, you were scared, surprised, relieved every 10mn. loads of emotions.
and one who strikes me at the end, the pain and sadness to have lost a wonderful actor.
