“Enthralling…as timelessly recognisable as it is riveting” Guardian
From the acknowledged master of the “well made play” and author of French Without Tears, After the Dance and The Winslow Boy, The Deep Blue Sea is Rattigan’s most enduring work. First performed in 1952, it tells the story of Hester Collyer, who, having deserted her husband for the charms of a dashing ex-fighter pilot, finds herself emotionally stranded and desperate, before meeting struck-off doctor Mr. Miller. These two outcasts, socially ostracised for their excessive loves, find a curious and moving kinship. This powerful and emotionally provocative work is probably the finest example of what 'well-made' playwriting can achieve
